The Beautiful Maths of Coral (and Crochet)

Images of this amazing crocheted coral sculpture have been all over the internet recently, but having looked into it a bit further it’s even more amazing than I’d first anticipated.  It turns out the structure of coral (hyperbolic space) is complicated and hard to reproduce, but using crochet they have managed to create a true likeness.  It’s a beautiful coming together of ‘mathematics, marine biology, feminine handicraft and environmental activism’.  Here is Margaret Wertheim talking about it at the 2009 TED.  It’s fascinating stuff.
